The first three parts of this series presenting the history of musical theatre illustrated the astonishing effect of the genre on European society. One after the other, the emerging archetypes of musical theatre became decisive factors in the evolution of the European character and its system of values and morality. By the end of the 19th century, the genres of musical theatre had grown extremely diverse, as a quick look at the varied fare on Europe's stages at the time - the Wagnerian world-vie...w, the triumph of operetta, the emergence of national opera and "isms”, along with the endless variety of new innovations and trends in musical theatre - will show. Then came the 20th century: the century of Satie, Cocteau, Picasso, Stravinsky, Bartók, Gershwin and the Beatles, the clamorous century of endless creative freedom, of épater le bourgeois, expressionism, dadaism, brutalism, guided by great ideals and great delusions. As previously in the series, inquisitive university students of acting and stage directing will draw from the musical theatre repertoire of hundred years that elapsed between post-Romanticism and post-modernism.
