On the evening of 23 October 1956, fighting around the Hungarian Radio building made it impossible to produce broadcasts, so an impromptu studio was set up in the Parliament building, where a few records were brought from the radio building and played between news reports. Frequently played was the Egmont Overture, which for the Hungarian listeners became inextricalbly intertwined with the revolution.
The world première of the work written to the jolting poems of Tibor Gyurkovics took plac...e on the 50th anniversary of the revolution, to overwhelming acclaim. "1956 was the defining experience of my youth. It was was marvellous to live through the sight of complete strangers, intoxicated with the revolution's initial success, happily embracing and freely engaging each other in conversation, and after the years of sorrow, again smiling and laughing. It was astonishing in Pestlőrinc on the morning of 4 November, with Soviet shells sailing over our heads, to hear Imre Nagy's plea for aid issuing from the radio. And then people hoping... that the West would help... 50 years later I felt that I had to pay homage to this wonderful monument of Hungarian history with a musical work.” (László Dubrovay)
The Zugló Philharmonic is preparing a special gala event to mark the 60th anniversary of 1956 in the way it deserves: by holding an unconventional history lesson combined with music for older primary school children and high school students. The involvement of the young musicians of the King Saint Stephen Symphony Orchestra will worthily remind the youngsters of the courage, spirit and dedication that was exhibited 60 years ago.
