If I were asked in a literary quiz which poet in the absolute first rank of contemporary Hungarian lyricism has published verses the least frequently and has the fewest independent published volumes, it would hardly be possible to come up with a different name. Szabolcs Várady is living proof that quality is in no way related to quantity: there is no relationship between the number of works published and artistic merit. His taciturnity and rare poetic musings, which count as exceptional events, ...arise from his stringent meticulousness: he only commits a poem to paper if he feels that it is perfectly ready and complete. It is no surprise, therefore, that this author, who once worked as the editor of Európa Press and more recently of the literary journal Holmi, and who is known not least of all for his astonishing literary erudition, would collect limericks of extreme density into a volume entitled Magyar badar (Hungarian Nonsense). The collaboration of the timelessly virtuousic Ferenc Darvas and the elegant and superb specialist in poetry recital Pál Mácsai promise to make this evening at Müpa an exceptional occasion.
