The year 1791, the last of Mozart's short life, was also a hugely productive one for him. His Piano Concerto in B-flat major (K. 595), the composer's final composition in the genre, was registered in his thematic catalogue on January 5. Then, over the remaining eleven months, Mozart composed, among other works, his last two operas; La Clemenza di Tito and The Magic Flute; the Clarinet Concerto and the Requiem Mass, although death overtook him while he was working on the latter.
Per questa... bella mano, a bass aria with an obbligato double bass accompaniment, was most likely originally written as an interlude, which Mozart then used to 'improve' a contemporary opera buffa being performed in Vienna at the time. His last completed instrumental work, the Clarinet Concerto in A major, was 'addressed' to his good friend and fellow freemason, the virtuoso clarinettist Anton Stadler.
Researchers have satisfactorily cleared up the thousand mysteries surrounding the genesis of the Requiem that closed out Mozart's ouevre. In 1964, the great musicologist Otto Erich Deutsch found documents proving that it was Count Franz von Walsegg who sent Mozart the commission through a mysterious messenger. (The count had a fondness for commissioning compositions which he would then copy and present as his own work.) One of the best known incomplete works in the history of music, the Requiem is usually performed in the version finished by his student Süssmayr.
