After the extraordinary success in England of Dvořák’s large-scale oratorical works of the 1870s and 1880s, his Stabat Mater, The Spectre’s Bride and Saint Ludmila, the composer was commissioned to write his Requiem for the Birmingham Festival in 1888. The busy composer only set about writing the work in early 1890, and was interrupted in the task on several occasions by trips abroad. The world première took place on 9 October 1891 in Birmingham, with the composer conducting. Similarly to Verdi’...s own funeral mass written some 17 years earlier, the Requiem was initially intended for the concert hall and not for use in an ecclesiastical setting. Juliane Banse began her voice studies at the age of 15, and made her debut on the opera stage at the age of 22. As a singer of lieder and oratorios, she is one of the busiest performers around today. Jolana Fogašová was a student of the Bratislava Conservatory from 1986 to 1990, before continuing her singing studies at the Music Academy in Prague. On graduation, she perfected her skills in Munich and at master classes with Carlo Bergonzi. The Slovak tenor Peter Berger began his voice studies at the Košice Conservatory, beginning his stage career with the State Theatre Košice and winning the prize of the Slovak Literary Foundation for his portrayal of the prince in Dvořák’s opera Rusalka. Swiss-born bass-baritone Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester has sung leading roles in numerous prestigious German opera houses, is a celebrated star of the Berlin opera and a regular guest at the Bayreuth Festival, and has many recordings to his name.
