How does a contemporary work "behave” in the context of music history? Does it find its place among works from earlier times? And do we hear familiar pieces differently in light of the new work? These are questions that may arise in relation to this programme. The music of György Kurtág is placed here within the context of a Mendelssohn overture composed in 1832 after a poem by Goethe and a symphony by Schumann.
The orchestral version of Kurtág's Dialogues (Zwiegespräche) was arranged by O...livier Cuendet. "For me, Kurtág's music is a big synthesis,” said the Swiss conductor in an interview. "Kurtág is like Bach, who once created a synthesis of the diatonic and the chromatic in his music. Kurtág helps us learn to rediscover old things. He is able to convey very complex meanings using very simple devices.” Cuendot described the work as follows: "Dialogues is a joint work by the two Kurtágs, father and son, for synthesiser and string quartet, which has been played by the Keller and Arditti string quartets on a few occasions. With György Kurtág's permission, I prepared an orchestral arrangement, with which we have also toured with my ensemble. During the Budapest concert of the tour, we have already performed one or two movements from this piece. After this, they both asked me to write a complete orchestral arrangement for Gábor Takács-Nagy.”
