Formed over three decades ago, the Budapest Strings now plays several works expanded into a symphonic ensemble. The orchestra is steeped in tradition for performing the music of Joseph Haydn because since 1995 they have organised the annual International Haydn Festival at Fertőd-Eszterháza. Of his 104 symphonies, Haydn completed No. 69 in 1776, which was influenced by some recently composed comic operas, giving it more the character of a divertimento. Its nickname derives from a well-known gener...al of the time, Baron Laudon whose name the publisher attached to a piano arrangement, in the belief that it would improve sales. Schubert composed his C minor opening movement for a projected string quartet in 1820 but failed to complete the work. It is written with beautiful economy, concision and dramatic intensity and is frequently heard in a version for string orchestra. Péter Tóth composed his Lorca Chansons cycle in January 2008 for Ildikó Iván and the Budapest Strings. The composer had this to say about the seven-movement composition: “The verses are very condensed and it is barely possible to discern events. Rather they are feelings, sense and allusions. For me, they were always chansons. I very much fell in love with the stifling southern heat, with its brooding hidden emotions, unexpressed words and of course, flying knives”. The concert concludes with one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Vivaldi’s Four Seaons, written in 1723, will be played by one of the most talented Hungarian young musicians Kristóf Baráti who celebrates his thirtieth birthday in 2009.
