Pavel Josef Vejvanovský (1633–1693) was a Czech composer, trumpeter and choir prefect. He left around 100 mainly sacred and instrumental works to posterity, preserved in the archives of Kroměříž Palace in eastern Moravia and the National Museum in Prague. Vejvanovský’s compositional style is characterised by the influence of Viennese and Venetian Baroque music, with beautiful melodies and varied, masterful orchestration that continue to dazzle listeners several centuries later. Jan Dismas Zelen...ka (1679–1745), the most important composer of the Czech Baroque, served in the court at Dresden for decades, and counted Bach and Telemann among his admirers. He acquired renown as a virtuoso player of the violone (double bass viol) in the royal orchestra, and was highly regarded by his contemporaries for the harmonic and dynamic audacity of his music. His oratorio Sub olea pacis was written in 1723, while his significant instrumental oeuvre contains five capriccios. The Czech Benda family played a distinguished role in the history of German music for some 250 years. The oldest of the boys, František (Franz) Benda, carved out a significant career as a concertmaster and composer of some 80 violin sonatas and 15 violin concertos for the orchestra of Frederick the Great in Potsdam. It was also here that his younger brother Jan Jiří (Johann Georg) Benda worked as a viola and violin player and composer. The career of Jiří Antonín (Georg Anton) Benda likewise began in the court of Frederick. He achieved considerable fame as a writer of melodramas, a genre which influenced Mozart, who had a high opinion of his older contemporary. Presented by: Budapest Festival Orchestra, Palace of Arts
