Ninety-two registers, five manuals, 6,804 pipes: the organ of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall is capable of producing an infinite number and combination of sounds. These are just numbers, however, and numbers do not produce music. Fortunately, we have been able in recent years to hear a good number of artists in the Palace of Arts who are able to take full advantage of the instrument's extraordinary capabilities and put them to use in diverse musical contexts.
One such artist is Lás...zló Fassang, who revealed in an interview that he regards the concert hall's organ as the ideal instrument for experimentation, and who believes in breaking down the boundaries between artistic genres, not just musical ones. In the past, Müpa organ concerts have seen the exciting possibilities provided by organ music itself presented in the context of literature, film and light shows, and folk and world music. On this occasion, it is the turn of choreography. Given that music and dance have existed together since time immemorial, this concept is as unusual as it might sound. It is a connection that is sometimes close, sometimes loose, and sometimes absent. The dance movements that emerged from the workshop of Johann Sebastian Bach were for the greater part sovereign pieces of music in their own right, relating to a given contemporary dance only in their tone and character. We will hear a beautiful selection of these in the first half of the concert.
The tables are turned in the second half of the evening, which features music originally created without reference to dance, and yet - as proof of the aforementioned primeval connection - carries within it the possibilities of movement. These works come to life in the context of choreography created by the internationally renowned Attila Kun, who has a number of hugely successful productions to his name in both Hungary and Switzerland.
