Carl Orff is usually billed as the composer of Carmina Burana, even though the piece is part of a triptych, Trionfi. One of the other two compositions is a cantata written mostly on Catullus's love poems, completed in 1943. Interestingly, the ensemble that accompanies the choir and the soloists comprises only four pianos and percussive instruments.
Emil Petrovics originally intended the one-act opera he wrote in 1962 on the basis of Aristophanes's comedy, and then reworked nine year...s later, as a musical. While both works performed on this evening provide a very enjoyable listening, they will also be coupled with captivating visuals at the Spring Festival. A few years ago, Kossuth Prize laureate Tamás Juronics and the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company very successfully joined forces with the Dohnányi Orchestra in a production of Carmina Burana, and we are again to expect a grand, high-spirited, spectacular choreography.
