A prima donna among prima donnas, Renée Fleming is the Metropolitan's greatest star. No lesser personality than Georg Solti declared of this extraordinarily versatile artist that Renata Tebaldi was the only other soprano of comparable quality he had encountered in his long career. Luckily we will get to see Fleming often during this series of opera broadcasts from the Met, but this will be the first occasion we can see her in one of her signature roles, that of the hopelessly lovelorn wate...r nymph Rusalka.
The other pillar of an exceptional cast, Piotr Beczała in the role of the Prince, has been an omnipresent fixture on the international opera scene for the past decade, launching straight into his debut at the Metropolitan in 2006 in the title role of Verdi's Rigoletto. In the role of the witch is American mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, an artist with a presence that demands respect and exceptional vocal attributes that give full range to her extraordinarily nuanced expressive capabilities. Emily Magee, who the New York Times described as blessed with "a voice of ravishing lustre,” plays Rusalka's rival the foreign princess, while the astonishingly multifaceted John Relyea sings the part of the title character's father.
Musical direction of Dvořák's wonderfully melodic fairytale opera, premièred in 1901, has been perceptively assigned to the young French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, a prodigiously talented regular at the Metropolitan since 2009. As the recently appointed music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the ensemble associated with the names of Eugene Ormandy and Leopold Stokowski, Nézet-Séguin is contracted by the Met for one production a year on average, and has been heard at the New York opera house conducting Carmen, Don Carlos, Faust and La Traviata in previous years.
