Grigory Sokolov drew the attention of the Russian music scene to his extraordinary talent as early as the age of five. Born in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg), he first attended a special music school before entering the Leningrad Conservatory in 1960. He first performed in public at the age of 12, and in 1966, at the age of 16, was unanimously awarded the Gold Medal in the 3rd International Tchaikovsky Competition for piano by a jury headed by Emil Gilels. His success was followed by concert tours... with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy, Portugal and Germany, as well as in North America and the Middle East. Sokolov has played in the Musikverein in Vienna, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, New York's Carnegie Hall, and at venues in London, Salzburg, Tokyo, Paris, Rome and Madrid. He has partnered orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Helsinki, and the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra in Milan, working with many of the world's leading conductors. Today, Sokolov is one of Russia's most celebrated artists, with a broad repertoire extending from Bach to Schoenberg, a depth and originality in musical interpretation, and a precision in performance that grips both audience and critics alike wherever he plays.
