At its traditional season-opening concert on the eve of the anniversary of Béla Bartók’s death, the Hungarian National Philharmonic also presents works by two of the great composer’s leading contemporaries. Guest soloist for the evening is Yuja Wang, one of the outstanding personalities among the generation of young Chinese pianists now conquering the world, who will perform Bartók’s technically extremely difficult Piano Concerto No. 2. Completed in 1931, the work is primarily characterised not ...by its inspiration in folk music but by the strongly rhythmical style recognisable in the neoclassical music of Stravinsky. The concert begins with Two Pictures, an enchanting and colourful piece Bartók composed around the same time as his opera Bluebeard’s Castle. The Scherzo is a true curiosity as it is a rearrangement for orchestra by Zoltán Kocsis of one of the movements of Four Piano Pieces, a work which the 22-year-old Bartók dedicated to Ernő Dohnányi. The latter’s Symphonic Minutes is a scintillatingly virtuosic piece for orchestra written in 1933, by which time the composer was already one of the leading figures in Hungarian musical life. The work was first performed in the same year under Dohnányi’s baton at a gala concert held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, alongside Kodály’s Dances of Galánta, which was based on melodies from the early 1800s and remains a frequently performed work around the world to this day.
