The series of waltzes written by Ravel several years earlier also started life as a piano work. Today, it is a beloved piece at concert halls around the world in symphonic form. The second half of the evening features another unique masterpiece: César Franck's work is difficult to classify, since it masterfully merges both the German and French symphonic styles. Its slow movement sounds like a lyrical instrumental aria accompanied by harp and plucked strings, and an awesome organ-like effe...ct is repeatedly created by the music throughout the piece.
