This concert features well-known works by Russian composers that are unique in the way they combine Russian and European traditions. Both can also be termed 'the apotheosis of melody', since they captivate and engross the listener with an almost unbroken melodic line: one simply cannot get enough of the singing, Russian-style airs. The popularity of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto, written when he was in his mid-thirties, is primarily owed to its opening theme, even though this motif never re...turns during the course of the work. The superb soloist, who will be featured playing this wonderful masterpiece, is the same age as the composer was when he wrote this piano concerto. Gábor Farkas also served as the soloist at the opening concert, recorded live and released to tremendous international acclaim, of the 2011 Liszt bicentenary in which Zoltán Kocsis conducted the Hungarian National Philharmonic. Born in Ózd and now performing concerts all over the world, Farkas won the grand prize at the competition organised by New York Concert Artist & Associates, which yielded a solo recital at Carnegie Hall in March 2016.
Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff are closely related, at least in a musical sense, since the latter regarded his elder countryman as a role model. Completed in 1908, Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 was the young composer's great prolonged work: at the time he was basking in the fame brought by his Second Piano Concerto. János Kovács, the maestro for the evening, is an eternal member of the Hungarian State Opera and one of the most renowned Hungarian conductors of our time.
