The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra is going out of its way to mark the Haydn year: since the start of their season in September, this is their third concert featuring a Haydn work – or rather, works, because this time they are presenting two compositions, both in the key of D major. Haydn’s symphony number 93 (out of 104) is one of the sets known as the London Symphonies, which were written to a commission for a London based impresario. The Piano Concerto in D major is perhaps the bes...t known surviving Haydn keyboard concerto, and the soloist is none other than Dezső Ránki. Whenever he and Kocsis perform together, it is a red-letter day; it is a safe bet that this evening will be unforgettable. There is probably no one who knows Béla Bartók’s oeuvre better than Zoltán Kocsis. He is forever rethinking his earlier interpretations and as the artistic director of the ongoing Bartók New Series, his recordings include the very latest in scholarship. Although his Concerto for Orchestra recording of 2004 was declared as being definitive when it was released, earning many prizes across the globe, his concept of the work has matured and he will probably record it again for the current series. This evening, everyone present will get the opportunity to hear just how his thoughts have moved on.
