The holiday of Christmas has always played a prominent role in the music of Christianity. Over the course of the centuries, the birth of the Saviour has become the most colourfully celebrated event in the traditions of the various Christian churches, in folk culture, and in the arts. What makes this holiday season particularly exciting is the harmonic way in which these forms of expression - whether belonging to the spheres of religion, unsophisticated folk traditions, or the high arts - a...ll complement each other.
Each season during the Advent period, the Hungarian Radio Children's Choir gives a standalone concert featuring all of the choir's ensembles, with the littlest ones appearing in a Bethlehem folk pageant and the main chorus also performing. This year, the latter will include a world première: János Vajda's mass Missa solaris, written for children's chorus and dedicated to László Matos. At the concert, the older ‘Seedling' group will be singing selected excerpts from the Hungarian children's choir literature, while the fairly recently formed Girls' Choir will make its first Müpa Budapest appearance as an ensemble with choral works from the Romantic period and the 20th century.
