The first phase of Kodály and Bartók's early mature pieces brought forth several compositions that are very closely linked to each other. Kodály wrote his orchestral piece Summer Evening as his thesis work to complete his studies at the music academy, and then reworked it slightly two decades later at the request of Arturo Toscanini. Just like Bartók would do a few years later in his piece Two Pictures, Kodály relayed his most recent experiences collecting folk song through the lens of turn-of-t...he-century French music. The orchestral pieces by John Adams and Péter Zombola also form an interesting couple, sharing kindred outlooks to match their similar titles.
