Jordi Savall represents a unique splash of colour on the early music scene of our time. Over the four decades of his career, he has mapped out territory and brought it to our attention like no one else. This is closely linked to his origins: he was born on what is culturally one of the most exciting areas of Europe, the Iberian Peninsula. This Catalan musician was originally a viola de gamba player and he contributed to this instrument’s renaissance. He was the soloist in the film All the World’...s Mornings starring Gérard Depardieu, which sold over a million records, not the usual fate for classical music CDs. As a conductor, Savall today is one of the most popular interpreters of Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque music, but the Viennese classics and Romantic works are not alien to him. To perform his extraordinarily wide repertoire, he has founded three orchestras, each one playing on period instruments. The most important is Hespèrion XXI, with whom Savall has extended the boundaries of early music to those of world music. The result of his “musical crusade”, accompanied by strings, plucked instruments and percussion and led by himself, has been numerous exciting thematic CDs, the programmes of which have been about Christopher Columbus, the city of Jerusalem, Don Quixote, the courts of the Spanish and French kings, Saint Francis of Xaver and geographical discoveries. In 2008, the European Union appointed him and his wife Montserrat Figueras ambassadors of dialogue between cultures, while UNESCO made them “Artists for Peace”. In recent years, their two children, Arianna (harp, vocals) and Ferran (theorba, vocals) have been increasingly involved in their popular productions.
