Although it is now almost 50 years old, the Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra has experienced a remarkable rejuvenation in recent years, treating season ticket holders to a host of world-famous young artists. Holders of season tickets will have seen cellist Gautier Capuçon and trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov in the first half of 2011, while the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall stage will be occupied by a pianist in October. Joyce Yang was born in South Korea, receiving her first piano from her aunt fo...r her fourth birthday. Her precocious talent quickly became apparent: only seven years later, she had already relocated to New York to attend the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School. Here, she studied under Yoheved Kaplinsky, a former apprentice to Bartók and student of Ilona Vincze-Kraus at the Israel Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. In June 2005, she burst onto the international music scene when she won the Silver Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition - despite being the youngest entrant. In addition to the prize of 20,000 dollars, she also received a host of invitations to record and perform in concert. In November 2006, she made her début with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Lorin Maazel at the Avery Fisher Hall. In December 2009, Yang appeared for the first time at the Palace of Arts, performing two Beethoven piano concertos (in C minor and E-flat major) with remarkable composure under pressure. This time around, she will play his Piano Concerto in B-flat major alongside pieces of music from two other great Viennese classical composers: an early Haydn symphony followed by Mozart's penultimate symphonic work.
