The Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra are dedicating this concert to the liturgical music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Franz Schubert (1797-1828). The first part will feature Mozart's mysterious and grim Kyrie in D minor, followed by one of his most important church music works from the Salzburg years - and for me, one of the most beautiful and one of my favourites: the rarely heard litany listed as catalogue number 243. To accompany these two works as the second part of the ...concert, we have selected Schubert's final Mass in E-flat major, one of the unique masterpieces of the author's entire oeuvre, and one that is not particularly easily accessible.
Mozart and Schubert's musical styles are linked by many similar musical ideas - and I feel an especially strong such relationship between Mozart's litany and Schubert's mass: in addition to the common selection of E-flat major as a tonic key, the themes opening the two works are also "twins” to each other. We hope that you too will enjoy how the programme was compiled. To the best of our knowledge, this concert represents the first time that any of the three works have been played in Hungary on period instruments since the 18th and 19th centuries. (György Vashegyi)
