“Lohengrin is Wagner’s first flawless masterpiece, a perfect whole, closed in atmosphere, with its own sound, a masterpiece with an individual language” - writes György Kroó of Wagner’s arguably most popular opera. Due to his involvement in the Revolutions of 1848 he was residing in exile in Switzerland when in 1850, conducted by Liszt, the piece premiered in Weimar. Last year, the piece took stage, directed by László Marton and under the musical direction of Ádám Fischer, at the Palace of Arts ...as part of “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival. The harmonious cooperation of the two artists brought about a new genre, the ‘chorus opera’ featuring many lively scenes and performers. The documentary film recording the creative process analyses the philosophical, aesthetic and human questions raised by the work, devoting considerable attention to Lohengrin’s central theme, the unfathomably complex relationship between man and woman. As Wagner articulates the essence of the work: “Lohengrin sought the woman who does not ask who he is and where his homeland is, but who loves him as he is, as she sees him. He hid the superiority of his nature, because it was not admiration and worship that he longed for, but the only thing that could save him from loneliness: love. But its treacherous glory remains with him, banality beholds him, envy rages against him, and all this casts its shadow to the heart of his loving wife; it induces doubt and jealousy, forces the confession of his divinity, and Lohengrin returns to his solitude in a state of perish.” Cinematographer: László Reich Cameraman: János Geier Editor-director: Judit Várbíró Palace of Arts Studio The admission is free for this event, registration required.
