Dezső Karasszon was born in Szentes in 1952 and graduated from both the organ and musicology faculties of the Academy of Music. He is today not just one of the leading Hungarian organists but also highly respected for his musical scholarship. He is the premiere advocate of the works of the great and unfairly neglected Baroque composer Girolamo Frescobaldi, has recorded the organ sonatas of Zoltán Gárdonyi and translated many specialist books into Hungarian. Since 1980 he has been the organist of... the Nagyerdő Lutheran church and also a professor at the Conservatoire in organ and ecclesiastical music in Debrecen. Between Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C major we shall hear the Chorale Prelude which was published around 1747. It was one of what the publisher called Schübler chorales and are transcriptions of movements from a cantata of the same name. An interesting feature is that the chorale melody is heard in the bass register. There is a long tradition now of writing works based on the letters of Bach’s name. One of the most recent is particularly interesting because of its scoring: Sententiae Supra B-A-C-H by István Koloss, organist of the Budapest St Stephen Basilica and a composer best known abroad for his church works. Marco Enrico Bossi was born in 1861 and died in 1925 amid tragic circumstances when the ship he was travelling on from New York to Italy sank. He was one of the greatest and most famous organists at the turn of the 20th century and was a popular guest artist in Hungary. He was the living embodiment of Italian romantic organ music and left some five hundred compositions behind. One of the most important of these is the Organ Concerto in A minor expanded for string orchestra.
