The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, the saying goes. Perhaps this might explain why the Russia of the 19th century sought out the cultural products of Western Europe, while France at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries had a passion for exotic Oriental cultures; in other words, a fascination for the "other” held sway in both countries. This is how Tchaikovsky in Moscow came to take Shakespeare's dramas as the basis for his compositions, as in the case of The Tem...pest, his symphonic fantasia to be heard this evening. For his part, Igor Stravinsky - when working in Paris, at the request of the Ballets Russes - took an ancient Russian folk tale as his inspiration for Petrushka.
The influence of Eastern folk music is also evident in Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No.1, a work which is nevertheless characterized more by autobiographical elements and references to the world around the composer. The concerto was premièred by his close friend Mstislav Rostropovich, who numbered this evening's soloist Sergei Slovachevsky among his students.
