"I was simply born to be a pianist,” declared five-year-old Nikolai Lugansky to the great surprise of his parents. The Moscow-born artist started by taking piano lessons from a neighbour, and then at age seven commenced his official studies at the Russian capital's Central Music School, where he studied under Tatiana Kestner, a former student of Alexander Goldenwieser. In 1988, he won first prize at the All-Union Competition in Tbilisi and a silver medal at the Eighth International Bach Co...mpetition in Leipzig. Then, after placing second at Moscow's Rachmaninoff Competition in 1990, he took the special prize for best pianist at the Mozarteum International Summer Academy in 1992.
In 1993, he suffered an accident that resulted in injuries to his hands and back, and months would pass before he could resume practising. During this difficult period, he had to decide whether or not to enter the Tenth International Tchaikovsky Competition, which was coming up in the summer of 1994. Eventually he decided that the preparations might help him return to the stage. His decision proved correct: he won the competition. Since then, his international acclaim has been beyond question: he performs as a soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras and is a regular guest at its leading concert halls. His playing is characterised by depth and multifacetedness. In addition to playing concerts, he also teaches at the Moscow Conservatory.
