Conductor: Leonard Slatkin Weber: Oberon – overture Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major, op. 107 Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, op. 68 The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in the 2006/2007 season. Based in London, it was founded by the legendary Sir Thomas Beecham and rapidly became one of the world’s leading orchestras. Beecham was succeeded by conductors of the calibre of Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy.... Since 1996, the post of music director has been held by Daniele Gatti. At last year’s Royal Albert Hall concerts, the orchestra performed among others with Leonard Slatkin, who has been the orchestra’s principal guest conductor since 2005. For the last eleven years, he has been the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra Washington and has regularly conducted the world’s most distinguished ensembles, among them the New York, the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic, the Chicago and the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He was born in 1944 in the United States, but is perhaps closest to British musical life: from 2000 to 2004 he was principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and was the first non-British musician to conduct the Last Night of the Promps. He has made over one hundred recordings and received five Grammy awards, as well as a further fifty nominations. The astoundingly talented Danjulo Ishizaka was born in 1979 to a German mother and a Japanese father. He began the cello at the age of four and perhaps his strongest influence has been Boris Pergamenchikov. He has triumphed at the world’s leading cello competitions, in 2003, he was awarded the “Young Artist of the Year” award and made his first record for Sony Classical. His artistic development has been strongly aided by György Kurtág, Bernhard Greenhouse, Menahem Pressler and the Amadeus Quartet. In the 2007/2008 season, he will perform with Krzysztof Penderecki, Valery Gergiev and Maxim Vengerov.
