After a few decades of relative neglect, the music of Dmitri Shostakovich is once again enjoying a renaissance these days, and today one can state without fear of contradiction that the Russian composer was one of the 20th century's very greatest. In recent years, beyond a doubt it is András Keller and Concerto Budapest that the Hungarian audience has to thank, in large measure, for their exposure to Shostakovich's oeuvre. Even in the opening piece of this tribute concert, the circus and jazz so...unds of Alfred Schnittke's 1976 suite of film music Clowns and Children evokes the style of his great fellow Russian composer. The evening will then continue with Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, which was completed in 1948 but could not be performed until 1955. As David Oistrakh, the first violinist to perform the piece, but it: 'This work is exceptionally interesting and presents the soloist with an appealing task.' The solo part, described by Oistrakh as a 'Shakespearean role', will this time be played by a frequent guest in Budapest: Sergei Krylov. Closing the concert will be Shostakovich's final symphony: rich in quotes, the work offers motifs from the music of Rossini, Wagner, Mahler and Glinka to discover.
