Il trovatore is often condemned for its tangled plot. Woven from hard-to-unravel threads, the story, however, is a legacy of Baroque operas that still haunted Verdi in the 1850s. More important are the sense of excitement, the romance and the passion that give the work its magic, and the many popular passages that make Il trovatore a favorite with opera fans. The irresistible appeal of this production by the Hungarian National Philharmonic comes from its great cast, which includes international singers as well, and a conductor who speaks Verdi's music as his mother tongue: Carlo Montanaro.

There are some operas that are received coolly by the audience at their première and only slow struggle to win acclaim. Il trovatore did not share this fate: the première at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on 19 January 1853, was the beginning of the legendary work's triumphal procession that has continued to this day. Hovhannes Ayvazyan, the Armenian tenor appearing as Manrico, has achieved significant success in front of audiences in Vienna, Toronto, Geneva and Dublin and has portrayed the protagoni...st of Il trovatore before. Italian soprano Selene Zanetti, who will be singing the role of Leonora, is at home in the styles of a diverse range of opera composers, from Mozart, Verdi and Smetena to Menotti, Puccini and Wolf-Ferrari. Taking the stage as Count di Luna is the excellent Romanian baritone Serban Vasile, who sang the title role in the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy's production of Nabucco in December 2021. Ever since her victory at the 1986 Pavarotti Singing Competition, Ildikó Komlósi has been a star of the international opera world. István Gáspár, Gabriella Szalai-Illés, László Kálmán, Dániel Kelemen and Sándor Boros are artists of the Hungarian National Choir who this time will be demonstrating their skills as soloists in dramatic roles. Thanks to his passionate and highly expressive performances, Carlo Montanaro has become a favorite of the Budapest audience in recent years.
