Not long after the death of Rossini in 1868, 13 Italian composers were asked to write a requiem together to mark the first anniversary of the Italian maestro’s passing; Verdi was assigned the final Libera me movement. The world première of this joint work eventually took place only in the 1980s, but Verdi did not let his own efforts go to waste: in 1873, on the death of Alessandro Manzoni, one of the greatest Italian poets and writers of the 19th century, he took his already written movement and... composed the missing parts to complete his own requiem. He thereby created a work which does not fit into the liturgical tradition, but which found its home in the concert hall. So much so that since its première in 1874 it has become, alongside Mozart’s Requiem, the piece of its kind most frequently performed on All Souls’ Day – the day declared a holiday in the 10th–11th centuries. Of course, it is not performed exclusively on this date, and its popularity is perhaps partly due to the fact the composer, who acquired international fame through his operas, was able to faithfully express all the emotion and nuance the act of mourning contains. Leading two illustrious Hungarian ensembles, the work will be conducted at the Palace of Arts by Alberto Veronesi, whose CV displays a long list of prestigious opera festivals and opera companies of which he has served as artistic director in various corners of the globe. The Italian conductor is not only an outstanding performer and expert in the 19th century musical theatre of his homeland, but a scholar of the genre to boot. He has given his name to critically acclaimed recordings and premières of the operas of Puccini, Mascagni and Leoncavallo, working with great singers such as Elīna Garanča, Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Plácido Domingo.
