Premièred in 1868, this work is the composer's sole mature comic opera. Wagner, however, would not have been been being true to himself if the story of Hans Sachs, Eva Pogner and Walter von Stolzing were merely entertaining: the piece poses numerous problems, and audiences following the twists and turns of the plot will find thought-provoking questions to seek the answers to.
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg sets forth concepts like tradition and renewal, love and resignation, youth and ageing, the individual and the community, one's trade and one's art - and most profound and sensitive of all: the preservation of Germanness and the self-consciousness and pride that it brings. This latter factor has provided opportunities to interpret the work in a tendentious fashion, interconnecting the opera with historical developments that occurred later.
Although Müpa Budap...est's production, premièred to tremendous acclaim in 2013, contains many novel and original scenographic moments, Michael Schulz's directing also does not deprive music-lovers expecting a theatrical production of the opera of the enjoyment of what is at heart a traditional staging. Ádám Fischer conducts Wagner's masterpiece in a way that relays the energy of the music while still sensitively treating the richness of detail and the philosophical profundity of the musical imagery. Previous performances of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg have left us with pleasant memories of James Rutherford's formidable Sachs, Bo Skovhus's riotous Beckmesser - one of the absolute virtuoso portrayals on the stage on those days - and Klaus Florian Vogt's dashing Walter, and now we are eagerly awaiting the return of - already familiar from her turns as Senta in Die fliegende Holländer - Elisabet Strid, this time as Eva.
