The Japanese city of Gifu has a particularly close relationship with Hungary, of which music is the most important essential element. Not only does the city boast the Gifu-Hungary Friendship Association, but it was also host to a Liszt master class in 2011 and is twinned with the Hungarian town of Veszprém. At the request of the performing choirs, this evening’s event has been given the title of a Japanese-Hungarian friendship concert. The first half of the concert will feature three works fro...m contemporary Japanese composers. Shukuga (Celebration) is about Hungarian-Japanese friendship, while Haru No Umi (The Ocean in Spring) paints a beautiful portrait of Japan. It is unusual in that it was originally written for the koto, an ancient Japanese instrument, but the version adapted for modern orchestra is suitable for performance anywhere in the world. The subtitle of the approximately three-minute Fukkosanka (Song of Praise) is Hand in Hand – The World in Friendship. Written for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, the work honours those who supported Japan’s heroic efforts in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011. The highlight of the concert will be Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, music of cosmic joy and brotherhood between nations, in which the chorus and orchestra will be joined by three Japanese solo singers and the Hungarian Attila Fekete. The conductor for the evening is also the leader of the Wien-Gifu Choir.
