Just as the Hungarian people as a whole need to maintain their national consciousness through political and cultural cohesion, so must a smaller community - the Jazygians - strengthen their own identity by summoning the memory of their history and ancestors through the magical power of art and the theatre. The distinguished aim of the creators of The Jazygians, a historical drama in song and dance, is to present the extraordinarily complex and exciting story of the Jazygian (Jász) people, ...following their path - their trials, defeats and recoveries - as depicted by history and the authors' own imaginations from their presumed former ancient homeland in Bronze Age eastern Persian to the towering mountains of the Caucasus, across the steppes of South Russia and modern Moldavia to the Kingdom of Hungary. And then it becomes a spiritual journey of memory and the imagination, starting with their settlement in their new home, progressing through their adoption of Christianity, the loss of their language, ancient beliefs and customs, their ultimate redemption, and leading up to our own time.
At the centre of the production is a story of a mythical family spanning seven generations. Its main characters are a modern young couple whose previous existences come to life through stories. This microcosm expands into the history of the entire Jazygian people, with the events of the past depicted in the individual scenes. The two lovers are sometimes separated by the storms of history, but their fidelity and yearning for freedom triumphs again and again. As the intimate and personal story merges into the history of the Jazygian people, so does the past with the present, and the profane with the sacred. The seven generations are portrayed by the seven main characters, with the Sages evoking the Jazygians' past, while the child characters help to reveal their future.
In a unique fashion as a creative work of total art, Jazygians integrates traditional and contemporary arts which, through dance, music, poetry and the visual arts, speaks in an unrestricted manner about all those human values in whose spirit not only the Jazygians, but all of us, all people, would wish to live our lives. The production's theatrical stories show the everyday life of a 'community' - its joys, sorrows, human relationships, ceremonies and the importance of faith above all else - with the shifts of time and space taking us through sometimes dramatic and sometimes playful changes to its resolution: a cathartic declaration of the glory of human existence and life.
