The true story of flamenco remains the subject of debate to this day. Some say it came from Southern Europe, while others trace its origins to Asia or North Africa. What is certain is that it evolved in the 16th century in southern Spain from the music of Gypsies, Muslim Arabs and Spanish Jews fleeing together from the forced conversions of the Catholic Inquisition. Since then, it has been renewed several times, but its three core elements - emotive vocals together with dance and guitar ac...companiment - have remained through modern times. Just as has the catharsis of the "duende”, meaning that the passions are experienced by both the performer and the listener.
This tradition emerges perfectly in the art of Estrella Morente, who was born in Granada in 1980. Of course, it couldn't have turned out any other way, since she grew up in a family environment where luminaries of flamenco were thick on the ground - as guests of her father, the legendary singer Enrique Morente. Estrella was singing with them from age seven, and at 17 was already featured in international flamenco festivals. In 2001, two albums of hers were released (Mi Cante y un Poema and Calle del Aire), with the former being reissued by Peter Gabriel's prestigious publisher in 2002. Along with Gabriel, Estrella can boast among her fans Pedro Almodóvar, who asked her to write a song for his film Volver. The piece also appeared on Estrella's 2006 album Mujeres, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy and paid homage to the great flamenco singers of old. In the following years, Estrella's popularity continued to grow. While her 2012 album Autorretrato featured contributions from collaborators Pat Metheny and Michael Nyman, as well as from flamenco star Paco de Lucia, Tomatito and Ketama, Amar en Paz was created two years later together with guitarist Niño Josele. Thus there is little risk in predicting that at her first concert in Hungary, Estrella will sweep aficionados of both traditional and fusion flamenco off their feet. With plenty of a certain duende.
