Most of Zoltán Kodály's music builds on the folk songs he collected, including his folk opera Háry János, the lead character of which was introduced by the composer as follows: "He is the embodiment of the Hungarian storytelling imagination. He doesn't lie: He creates tales; he's a poet. The things he says never happened, but he experienced them, and they are perhaps more true than reality. This reflects the kind of music needed for the piece, I don't know how successful I have been. But I do know that the songs of the characters are good. They are derived from folk tradition in every sense [...] They are the gemstones, only the setting is mine. I tried to do them justice.”
The popular work will now be performed by professional musicians as a major production featuring schoolchildren who have prepared thoroughly for the performance, as a realisation and reinterpretation of Kodály's oft-quoted statement: "May music belong to everyone!”
