Songbirds, lions, hens and cockerels, donkeys and mules, tortoises, elephants, kangaroos and who knows how many other animals will appear in this concert by the György Kroó Music School's symphony orchestra. Composers have always been fond of depicting animals and audiences always respond with joy to hearing animal sounds and musical motifs that evoke the characters of the animals. Darwin believed that music itself originated in the animal world. He felt that birdsong contains enough of the righ...t kind of motific repetition to be considered music that delights the ear. We can hear this in Vivaldi's concerto for flute, which perfectly mimics the singing of the goldfinch. We will also come across a host of other birds in Saint-Saëns's humorous suite for chamber orchestra and two pianos, which the composer wrote as a surprise for a friend to mark the carnival season. Caricatures of typical human characteristics are recognisable in the individual movements depicting various creatures, while the melodies themselves were written as parodies of familiar musical phrases to entertain the audience of the composer's day.
The performance will be followed by a free activity session at Banner Square called Reverberation for all holders of tickets for the performance.
