The deservedly popular Krisztina Tóth is considered one of the most significant figures in contemporary Hungarian literature as both prose writer and poet. Given her literary output, it promises to be an unmissable occasion for the Literarium Junior programme. The encounter will centre around the writer's most recent publication, Fehér farkas (White Wolf), a collection of short stories - she will read excerpts from it - with the author seeking to initiate a dialogue with the attending students based on the issues dealt with in the book.
In the book, the writer presents personal stories of exclusion, subservience, violence, suppression and poverty in a sharper-than-ever form, all in the context of the current social and socio-economic lines of division. 'We glance into the lives of others, yet these words reflect on ourselves. We recognise the stranger that lives inside all of us.' A comment that can be read on the sleeve of the book, and each of the short stories is proof of the truth of these lines. The compassion and solidari...ty and the voices formed by identification with those who suffer transform the tone of the works into a movingly honest portrayal - the impact of which you can hardly avoid. And if we add in Krisztina Tóth's direct, magical personality, we cannot help repeat that this encounter with her promises to be an unforgettable occasion for any student who truly loves literature.
