For centuries, we have tended to think of poetry collections as something to be read. Yet for millennia, poetry existed in spoken form and was passed down by oral tradition, including in folk songs.
Slam poetry, which is extremely popular with young people, has recreated this custom in a modern, up-to-date and hugely influential format.
Though the development of movable type enabled reading materials to reach an ever wider audience, as recently as the 19th century more people were familiar with songs set to music than with written verse. With the onset of modern technology (electricity, machinery, radio, tapes, digital devices and computers), poetry has once again started to regain its more traditional territory: sound, a theatrical presence and the opportunity for movement. Improvements in printing techniques have also expande...d the possibilities for visual poetric expression in the pages of books. Not to mention the appearance of complex modes of expression that have developed around cinema and electronic, video and computer technology. As a result, we have seen poetry begin to reclaim its space in the community through readings and recitals, sound poetry performances and the power of slam poetry.
