At one time or another, either listening to street musicians or at outdoor festivals, everyone has almost certainly encountered the unmistakable sound of the handpan and with it the peaceful, quiet, soothing ethereal pulsation that was born barely two decades ago from the rethinking of an instrument called the hang. The handpan is perhaps the youngest instrument in the world, a meeting of cultures in a steel shell that combines the qualities of Trinidad, Thai, Indian and Indonesian percussion instruments. Sounds of the Handpan: an interactive introduction to the magical world of the instrument.
But how was the handpan born? The two large metal shells from the low-carbon steel alloy, which are made by a complicated, lengthy process, are punched with various recesses that serve to emit sounds. The steel plate sounds different depending on the characteristics of the recess, so handpans with different tuning are created. In addition, each manufacturer uses different materials and processes, just as the shapes and tuning of the recesses vary: this way, each one is guaranteed to be unique. T...he beneficial effect of a handpan on the human nervous system requires no proof: anyone who has ever heard a professional player handle an instrument even once wants to experience its sound over and over again. The members of Sounds of Handpan know each other well and successfully engage with electronic music trends. Partnering with János "Afronauta” Nagy, one of the best known Hungarian handpan artists will be László Balogh on guitar and Péter Agárdi on electric drums and other instruments The wonders of the handpan can now be experienced by even the smallest audience members: a shared rhythm of applause and an opportunity to touch the instrument will bring them up close to the handpan and its magical atmosphere.
