The word sanké that gives the band its name means "root” or "roots” in the West African language of Susu. The Sanké Percussion Group has been playing traditional West African Malinke and Susu rhythms together since 2008. The flavour of this music is given by polyrhythms from the djembe and bass drums (dundun, sangban and kenkeni), as well as other rhythm instruments - the krin (a slit drum), bolon (a three-stringed lute) and balafon (a melodic instrument belonging to the xylophone family). In the second part of the concert, the audience too will be able to share in the frenetic joy of playing the boomwhacker.
The event will be followed by a free activity session on Banner Square entitled Reverberation for.
