Who wouldn't want to know the inner workings of a symphonic orchestra, how it prepares for a concert, what happens at an opera or ballet rehearsal, how folk music ensembles practice, or how a day in the life of a jazz band unfolds? For the first half of these two-part concerts, the audience - aided and abetted by the host - catches a glimpse into the everyday life of the rehearsal room and the musical processes of instructions and explanations, and the repetition of individual parts over a...nd over again. After the interval, the performers will appear dressed for the stage, or rather in fancy dress, inviting the audience to hear and watch a complete performance of the work, parts of which they already know intimately.
Many people think that jazz is a genre only for adults, of little interest and hard to understand for children. With its regular jazz programmes for children, the Palace of Arts aims to dispel this notion. As part of the series Behind the Scenes, the young audience can now get to know the workings of the big band (i.e. a large jazz orchestra), its traditions and instruments, and of course the most important characteristics and concepts of the music it plays: jazz. Whoever comes along will also discover where the jam of the title is to be found… if not in Granny's pantry.
