The young Palóc man would not marry a girl from another village or even another street because this would bring great shame upon him. Provided the parents did not oppose the match, the girl and young man would exchange handkerchiefs, this being followed by the official engagement on an appointed day, known as the kendő-lakás. On the morning of the wedding, the bride-to-be would send a bridal shirt to her betrothed. The engaged couple would set off separately for church, each with their own... wedding party. The bride would only be brought to the groom's house in the evening. After supper came the bridal dance, and then the consummation of the marriage. The wedding party would stay up merry-making the whole night. The next morning, the bride would be led to her initiation ceremony with her hair gathered in a knot. Then began the main part of the wedding feast, known as the öreg hérész; in some cases, old-style Palóc weddings lasted an entire week.
