The collection of folk instruments of folk musician, composer and record publisher Ferenc Kiss contains some unique and irreplaceable items. This exhibition places a number of valuable examples from this collection on public view. It includes rare instruments that once belonged to emblematic village folk musicians who are no longer with us, such as the hurdy-gurdy made by Mihály Bársony, the tárogató of Ferenc Kádár from Dévaványa, the antique zithers and tamburas bequeathed by Uncle Sándor Buda...i from Sándorfalva, or the ütőgardon of the Halmágyi couple from Gyimesközéplok. It also contains treasures that cannot be found in other major collections: a small Hutsul cimbalom, or the glass cimbalom and Ruthenian trembita, or alphorn, of Uncle Kálmán Bangó, the last traditional Budapest street musician. Similarly unique pieces in the collection are the horn-violin (or violinophone) and the Slovakian fujara, while instruments of unusual beauty include the button accordions and more modern versions of the instrument constructed in the 1950s, which are similarly lacking in public collections. During the exhibition our bookshop will be selling the storybook Papó zenedéje (Papó’s Music School), which the collector Ferenc Kiss wrote for small children. Beautifully illustrated by Dóra Keresztes, the book has a CD supplement featuring the sounds of all the folk instruments of Hungary. Presented by: Palace of Arts
