Born 110 years ago and gone now for 30, Zoltán Gárdonyi was one of the most important organists of the 20th century, leaving behind an extraordinarily rich oeuvre as a music historian and composer. Today, a third generation is already following in his footsteps: his son, Zsolt Gárdonyi is a composer and organist, a retired professor from the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg who taught at the institution for three and a half decades, while his grandson, Dániel Gárdonyi, is also an inhabitant o...f Würzburg and filled the highly prestigious post of chorus director and organist in Frankenberg between 2011 and 2015. He has given joint concerts with his father for years.
The programme features a representative selection of Zoltán Gárdonyi's ecclesiastical and secular works, augmented with compositions by Zsolt Gárdonyi, who turns 70 this year. One piece to be played, for example, is the set of variations written in 1958 to the Whitsunday hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, which gives organ playing the volume and colours of a symphony orchestra, as well as the composer's final choral prelude, written by the 66-year-old émigré in 1972 for his son as a rearrangement of Martin Luther's most famous melody, the folk hymn A Mighty Fortress is Our God.
Also to be played on Müpa Budapest's organ, with its inexhaustible tonal possibilities, will be a light-hearted composition by Zsolt Gárdonyi, a deeply knowledgeable researcher into jazz harmonics, a field he has taught for decades. The piece pays homage to those jazz pianists who have gone down as the greatest in music history.
