Mozart and Mahler rarely appear on the same programme, and a performance of the Budapest version of the latter's Symphony No. 1 is something of a collector's item in itself. The piece will be heard here with the movement that was later withdrawn and brims in places with youthful dynamism and occasionally explosive power, while elsewhere it is calmly nostalgic and even sarcastic. The names of tonight's guest artists is almost a guarantee of a special occasion: Cristian Mandeal is one of Romania's... leading conductors and has worked with soloists such as Alicia de Larrocha, Radu Lupu, Yefim Bronfman, Ivo Pogorelich, Mstislav Rostropovich and Maxim Vengerov. Equally, we are unlikely to find a more sensitive and well versed performer of this piano concerto and its movement of otherworldly beauty than Dezső Ránki.
