Carlos Saura did not study under Buñuel for nothing. By the 1970s, he was already a world-renowned director. And although recognition brought him a certain degree of protection, his 1974 film Cousin Angelica stirred up a huge storm in Spain. The scandal had already broken at the Cannes film festival, where masked youths broke in and stole the two rolls of film. The Spanish conservative press was rife with reports of foreign conspiracies to besmirch the honour of Spain. Yet despite thi...s, Saura's hero does little more than reminisce on his childhood at the start of the Spanish Civil War - as if a stitch in time has sucked him back into a city and family in the grip of civil war.
