Our memory has a tendency to rewrite films in our head. We often find ourselves continuing plot lines and concocting explanations for various mysteries noticed in the film. Other times, our ability to recall the film eludes us entirely, usually resulting in us watching it again. This is especially true of John Boorman's often cited classic, Deliverance, which many consider to have pioneered a genre of its own. However, little or nothing is said about the images happening before the story c...ommences. The breathtaking sights and sounds on screen during the opening credits convey an important message for 70's America. Vilmos Zsigmond's scenes capture both the brutal and beautiful sides of civilisation and nature, each scene carrying immense weight as it shows show an enchanted middle America in the fragile it truly found itself.
The film begins when four people embark on a canoe trip down a river which is scheduled to be flooded to create a reservoir - all in the name of profit and advancement. Needless to say, their adventure quickly turns into a nightmare. If the adventurers, now completely out of their element, are to survive, they must first overcome themselves. This question of what happens when average people find themselves in unusually perilous situations was influential throughout the period and can also be observed in Spielberg's early work. The film-makers of the time were most preoccupied by whether ordinary people could recognise their own limits and retain their humanity under even the most trying of circumstances. Is it possible to simply walk carefree into the great unknown? This widescreen adaptation of James Dicky's book and screenplay is just as sobering today as it was then - and Vilmos Zsigmond's images are truly unforgettable.
The series is made possible with the support of the Hungarian National Film Fund.
