The MÁV Symphony Orchestra's permanent conductor, Gergely Kesselyák, has frequently surprised his listeners and musicians alike with unusual pieces of music - and this concert is no exception. Scholars of Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle often cite the influence of Debussy, which attentive listeners can also discern for themselves in the composer's youthful work. On this evening, before playing Bartók's opera, Kesselyák will start with an early, seldom-heard work of Debussy's, La damoisel...le élue, a cantata for two voices and female choir based on English poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti's poem The Blessed Damozel. In the cantata, the young woman mourns her long-dead beloved - demonstrating a parallel with the opera, which ends with the man condemned to eternal loneliness. It will be a thrill to see if we can really find any kind of parallel between the melodic styles of the two works, which were written two decades apart, albeit by composers who were about the same age when they wrote them.
Having the two works performed together at the same concert will surely be an exciting splash of colour for the concert season. Making the evening even more significant will be the guest appearance of the world-famous Hungarian singer Ildikó Komlósi, who has recently been awarded the Kossuth Prize.
