As a new element of the Rising Stars series this season, jazz makes its first appearance as two promising groups - one British, one Hungarian - show off their talents on the Palace of Arts stage. In his home country of the United Kingdom, saxophonist and flautist Mike Fletcher is seen by many as a bright prospect for the future, excelling not only as a soloist and bandleader but as a composer as well. His compositions bear the stamp of modern jazz while also following tradition in many res...pects, but Fletcher's artistic horizons routinely extend far beyond the well-trodden path. The music of his trio, established in 2013 (with Olie Brice on double bass and Jeff Williams on drums), also gives room for expression in the context of folk and free improvisation. It is a mark of how highly the Birmingham musician is regarded that he has worked with the likes of drummer Bobby Previte, bassist Tony Levin and the late saxophonist John Dankworth.
The career of the evening's Hungarian star began in the most fortuitous way possible as both his father and mother are musicians and teachers; at home, jazz and classical music were always the most natural medium. The elder son of pianist and composer Kálmán Oláh, Krisztián Oláh trained in classical piano as a student at the Béla Bartók Conservatory, but his interest - unsurprisingly - turned at a very young age towards jazz and free improvisation. His outstanding abilities were noticed by the jury of the Creative Art Award founded by György Vukán, which granted him a special prize in 2011. In the ensuing years Krisztián has excelled in a number of Hungarian and European competitions, both as a soloist and in a trio with bassist Vilmos Schildkraut and drummer Dániel Serei.
