Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich are inescapable figures in 20th century Russian music, although their destinies were entirely different in terms of both their careers and music. Rachmaninoff was one of the last representatives of the European Romantic whose Piano Concerto No. 3 - regarded as one of the most challenging works in the genre - helped him to find a new home in America after the victory of the Bolshevik revolution. By contrast, the life of Shostakovich, who began as a modernist, w...as closely intertwined with the history of the Soviet Union, a connection that had a decisive influence on his entire oeuvre. His reputation at home was coloured by extreme turns of fortune: from communist arts policy's public enemy number one, he became the most important composer in the Soviet Union, and vice versa. At the time of the composition and first performance of one of his best-known orchestral works, the Leningrad Symphony of 1941, he was a national hero, an artist ready to serve his country, helping his compatriots through the suffering of war in the language of music.
Andrei Gavrilov ranks among the world's finest pianists today. He was not yet 30 years old when the esteemed music critic of The New York Times proclaimed him a major artist. He has worked with big-name conductors such as Abbado, Haitink, Muti, Ozawa, Svetlanov, Tennstedt and Rattle, and has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, and with orchestras in Los Angeles, Toronto, London, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. His recordings have won numerous international prizes.
