The last burlesque hero. How simple it would be if we could just place the comedian and director Jacques Tati into the category of French film comedy and satire! Unfortunately, this doesn't work, since Tati is his own, self-contained world. Chaplin and Buster Keaton might be the only ones he can be likened to. Because even though Tati's films are not silent, the dialogues are more like ambient sounds, noise or music. The story is driven in part by its central character - Monsieur Hulot - w...ith his awkwardness and oddness in itself perfectly choreographed, and in part by the visual gags. It is true that these visual jokes cannot be termed simple, and not least of all because sometimes they mean half the city has to be shut down. (Although it is true that a special city was built just for Playtime.) Instead, these ideas are complex architectural-photographic creative works that are practically impossible to translate.
Playtime is a kind of utopia taking place in the present, but suggesting a possible future that is not necessarily a happy one. A large share of the credit for the extraordinary set goes to the cinematographer, the Hungarian János Badal.
